Dr. Saugata Hazra is a Professor at IIT Roorkee in the Department of Bioscience and Bioengineering and an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Nanotechnology. An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed postdoctoral work at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and AECOM, New York.

Trained as an integrative structural biologist and protein engineer, Dr. Hazra leads a multidisciplinary laboratory that combines wet-lab and computational approaches to decode enzyme structure–function relationships and redesign biocatalysts. The group employs protein expression, kinetics, CD/fluorescence/ITC, X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, and molecular dynamics to explore mechanisms and drive structure-based drug discovery. Current applications include nanoparticle formulation, antimicrobial-resistance research, and sustainable biocatalysis.

A committed mentor and collaborator, Dr. Hazra fosters interdisciplinary partnerships and trains students to bridge computation, structural methods, and experimental biochemistry for translational impact.

Antibiotic resistance has been considered one of the biggest global concerns. Without anti-microbials combating deadly pathogens would be beyond our control leading to a situation called “diagnose for death”. A major goal of Hazra lab is to study enzymes that are playing a critical role in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. We are taking an interdisciplinary approach to understand the catalytic divergence of enzymes involving peptidoglycan synthesis, folate biosynthesis pathway, etc. towards the development of diagnostics and therapeutics utilizing our above-mentioned understandings. ​​
